Mrs. N: Successful Rehabilitation
Mrs. N, 69, was admitted to Kindred Hospital South Florida – Fort Lauderdale on August 11, 2010. She was suffering from perforated diverticulitis, a very serious gastrointestinal condition in which the walls of the intestine have become perforated. Upon admission, Mrs. N was bed bound on a ventilator with a tracheostomy tube. She was unable to eat or speak. She was totally dependent for bed mobility and transfers and required maximal assistance with activities of daily living.
The Kindred interdisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, therapists and specialists designed a treatment plan to meet Mrs. N’s specific medical needs. Top priorities were respiratory, physical, occupational and speech therapies.
After completing an intensive rehabilitation program, Mrs. N eventually had her tracheostomy tube removed and was able to speak and eat three meals a day. She was also able to walk 30 feet with a walker, transfer out of bed with moderate assistance, and complete her
activities of daily living with modified independence.
Four weeks after admission to Kindred Hospital, Mrs. N no longer required high intensity medical care. She was discharged on September 16, 2010 for continued rehabilitation before returning home.
Kindred Hospital South Florida – Fort Lauderdale’s success is apparent in stories like these as well as in our quality scores – our patients and families rate our quality of care at 93.8 percent and 97 percent would recommend Kindred.
